Errantry, Princess Mee, The Man in the Moon stayed up Too Late, The Man in the Moon came down Too Soon, The Stone Troll, and Perry-the-Winkle

Today I read several poems from The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.

Errantry, Princess Mee, The Man in the Moon stayed up Too Late, The Man in the Moon came down Too Soon, The Stone Troll, and Perry-the-Winkle. There are some hints they’re about Middle-earth, but some are subtle like the Bay of Bel (Belfalas).
As we read the last the eight year old had an observation about trolls.
8YO: “That couldn’t happen. Trolls turn to stone during the day.”
This led me down an interesting path of looking up trolls in the Encyclopedia of Arda*, and specifically stone-trolls. I found the footnote there citing that stone-trolls might have a different origin from other trolls quite interesting.
“There is some doubt about exactly where the Stone-trolls came from, and the cause of their vulnerability to sunlight. Tolkien discusses the issue in his letters (specifically, The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, No. 153, dated 1954) but there he confesses to being uncertain on the point himself. He suggests that these Trolls were 'counterfeits' rather than truly living creatures, and so could not survive outside the darkness that spawned them. He's careful to note, though, that these origins do not apply to all Trolls, and nor do the weaknesses of the primitive Stone-trolls.”
The concept of them not being truly alive could explain their strange speech, habits, and the fact that other trolls (e.g. in the Silmarillion) don’t love the sun but can fight in it. Regardless of where the truth lies I find there is always something new to learn about Tolkien.

The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Bombadil Goes Boating

Tonight we started The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and read the preface and the first two verses, the first one being the same as the book and the second “Bombadil Goes Boating.”

8YO (looking at the cover of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil before we started reading): “Who was Tom Bombadil?”
Me: “We don’t know.”
As we read the second verse the question came back.
8YO: “Is Tom Bombadil a dwarf?”
Me: “No.”
8YO: Who was Tom Bombadil?”
Me: “We don’t know.”
6YO: “Does the one who made the book know?”
8YO: “J. R. R. Tolkien.”
6YO: “Does J. R. R. Tolkien know?”
Me: “He never told us what Tom Bombadil was.”
8YO: “How old was Tom Bombadil? Do we know that? Was he around during the first age?”
Me: “Let me look it up.”
Me: “He saw the elves go East* so he is as old as the elves or older.”
8YO: “So he is older than Elrond.”
Me: “Yes. And remember Galadriel is older than Elrond.”
8YO: “Much older. She was in Valinor even before the Trees fell!”
“You old farmer fat that cannot walk for wheezing…”
8YO: “Who is he?”
6YO: “The guy with the dogs.”
Me: “Come, Maggot! Help me up!”

Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age

Tonight we finished up the Silmarillion by reading Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age…in which these tales come to their end. The kids enjoyed seeing the story connect back to what we’ve already read.

“…and they made Rings of Power.”
6YO: “Sauron helped.”
8YO: “Sauron helped with all except the three Elven rings. He made the One Ring all by himself. He was brave. I couldn’t have done it. It would be too risky and scary for me.”
“The NazgĂ»l were they, the Ringwraiths…”
6YO: đŸ˜±đŸ˜± “EEEEEE!!!!!”
8YO: “Daddy, I remember the owners of the Three, Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond. Is the fire one Gandalf’s?”
Me: “Yes.”
“…even to the borders of Greenwood the Great...”
8YO: “I know that one. Um…Mirkwood! It became Mirkwood later.”
“…and they established a realm in those lands that was after called Gondor, whereas the Northern Kingdom was named Arnor.”
8YO: “we know about those. At least the South kingdom. Pippin was in the South kingdom.”
“Chief among them were those whom the Elves called Mithrandir and CurunĂr…”
6YO: “Gandalf is Mithrandir.”
8YO: “Is Saruman the other?”
Me: “Yep.”
“…and the hearts of Elrond and Mithrandir darkened.”
6YO: “Mithrandir didn’t darken. He’s Gandalf. He’s good!”
8YO: “It means became troubled.”
“…and by its finder it was brought beyond search into dark hiding under the roots of the mountains.”
8YO: “Not by its finder. By his killer.”

AkallabĂȘth

Tonight we read the AkallabĂȘth in the Silmarillion, The Downfall of NĂșmenor.

“This was the beginning of that people that in the Grey-elven speech are called the DĂșnedain…”
*excitement ensued as only yesterday the eight year old had asked when they would learn about the DĂșnedain*
6YO: “Was Aragorn alive?”
8YO: “No.”
6YO: “Aragorn’s father?”
8YO: “No.”
6YO: “Aragorn’s father’s father?”
8YO: “No. It was long, long, long, long before them.”
6YO: “But they live a very, very, very long time because they’re descended from one that chose to be a man but used to be an elf.”
8YO: “Half [an elf].”
“In this age, as is elsewhere told, Sauron arose again in Middle-earth…”
6YO: “HEY, HEY, SAURON!!! I hate him. I hate Sauron.”
4YO (ornery mode, not serious): “I like him!”
“But PharazĂŽn took her to wife against her will…he seized the sceptre into his own hand…and the name of his queen he changed to Ar-Zimraphel.”
8YO: “But her name was MĂriel!”
6YO (indignant): “He’s not allowed to do that and he’s not allowed to take the scepter!! Does that mean the king?”
Me: “Yes.”
“But Ar-PharazĂŽn was not yet deceived, and it came into his mind that, for the better keeping of Sauron and if his oaths of fealty, he should be brought to NĂșmenor…”
8YO: “That’s a baaad idea. That’s what Sauron wanted.”
“…Amandil, councilor of the King, and his son Elendil, whose sons were Isildur and AnĂĄrion…”
6YO: “Is that the same Isildur?”
8YO: “No he was named after him. They were different.”
6YO: “Awwww. I wanted them to be the same.”
8YO: “They’re different.”
6YO: “Wait, Dad hasn’t answered.”
Me: “They’re the same.”
6YO: “Yay!”
(I’m not sure why the eight year old was confident they weren’t the same person đŸ€·‍♂️)
“And Seven Stones they had, the gift of the Eldar…”
8YO: “We know about those. Are those the seven seeing stones?”
Me: “Yes.”

Of the Voyage of EĂ€rendil and the War of Wrath

Tonight we read Of the Voyage of EĂ€rendil and the War of Wrath. I reminded the kids that we were on last chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion tonight and the six year old was despondent. “We’re almost done with the book!”

“…and she bore to him Elrond and Elros, who are called the Half-elven.”
6YO: “ELROND?? WHAT??? Is it the same Elrond?”
8YO: “Yes it is the same Elrond.”
“…and the Silmaril was bound upon his brow; and ever its light grew greater as they drew into the West.”
6YO: “Because they were getting nearer to Valinor?”
Me: “Yep.”
…”Morgoth looked not for the assault that came upon him from the West…”
8YO: “But he was wrong… In the last part of the book will we learn how Sauron becomes Dark Lord?”
Me: “Yes we will.”
“…well-nigh all the dragons were destroyed…”
8YO: “If they were all destroyed the Hobbit wouldn’t be true. It couldn’t be in the same world.”
6YO: “Was one of them Smaug?”
8YO: “No, he was much later.”
6YO: “Oh yeah. He was descended from one of them. There were girl dragons!”
“…and all the pits of Morgoth were broken and unroofed, and the night of Valar descended into the deeps of the earth.”
8YO: “Now I realize Sauron didn’t do anything. It was the host of the Valar. Sauron didn’t do anything, he just decided to be Dark Lord.”
8YO: “Daddy, were all the wizards Mair?”
Me: “Yep.”
6YO: “And wizardesses.”
Me: “All the wizards were male.”

Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin

Tonight we read Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin, meaning we’re only one chapter from the end of the Quenta Silmarillion (though the book has two more chapters behind that which we’ll read).

“…Gondolin the great, city of seven names…”
6YO: “What are the seven names.”
Me: “I’m not sure.”*
8YO: “But I thought Gondolin was a secret.”
Me: “It is a secret. Why do you ask?”
8YO: “Because it said Gondolin of the seven names. How could it be famous if it was a secret.”
I explained that it became famous much later after it ceased to be a secret.
“…and with them came dragons of the brood of Glaurung, and they were become many and terrible.”
6YO: “…and hard of scale. I said hard not heart.”
8YO: “Are there any girl dragons?”
6YO: “Likely or they’d die out.”
“…Glorfindel, chief of the House of the Golden Flower of Gondolin…”
8YO (grins): “He was in Lord of the Rings.”
6YO: “I forgot who Glorfindel was.”
8YO: “He was the one one who helped Frodo get to Rivendell. In the movie they replaced him with Arwen.”
“…Thorondor bore Glorfindel’s body out of the abyss…”
6YO: “It was a different Glorfindel. Was it a different Glorfindel dad?”
4YO: “It WASN’T a different Glorfindel.”
I then read from the Encyclopedia of Arda and we concluded that it most likely was the same Glorfindel.**
“In summary, the notes tell us that, after Glorfindel's death, his spirit was called to the Halls of Waiting, but then was re-embodied after a time by the Valar. He then returned to Middle-earth (either in the mid-Second Age, or as a companion of the Istari in the Third). For the full story of his return, refer to The Peoples of Middle-earth.”

Of the Ruin of Doriath

Tonight was a short chapter of the Silmarillion as we continued last night’s depression for the most part. But it also contained elements of hope.

Me: “Tonight we’re reading ‘Of the Ruin of Doriath.’ “
8YO: “What happened to the Girdle of Melian? How was it broken?”
Me: “You’ll have to wait and find out.”
“…there came forth the Shepherds of the Trees…”
8YO: “The ents! Were the elves friends of the ents?”
6YO: “Yes because the elves made the ents.”
8YO: “No. They taught the ents to speak.”
6YO: “Fine, have it your way.”
I had to interject to say the eight year old was correct.
8YO: “Who made the ents? I forgot.”
Me: “Yavanna. The wife of AulĂ« who made the dwarves.”

The Two Towers Movie Reaction

Tonight was the second of our three Middle-earth family movie nights with The Two Towers Extended Edition. Note: My greatest disappointment in The Two Towers is always movie Faramir. He is sooo different than book Faramir and I personally can’t see any of the changes as an improvement. But enough about me, below are a number of comments and questions from the kids as we watched.

*opening scene of mountains*
4YO: “Are those the Misty Mountains?”
Me: “Yes, or the White Mountains.”
6YO: “Why did Gollum have to come!”
8YO: “He’s a big part of it, remember?”
Gollum: “…swear on the Precious.”
8YO: “He’s supposed to say BY the Precious.”
*Orcs cut down trees*
8YO: “It’s really bad to cut down Fangorn Forest!”
*Dunlendings swear to follow Sauroman*
8YO: “They don’t know what is coming. That was a bad choice.”
Eomer: “If we don’t defend our lands Saruman will take them.”
Grima: “That’s a lie.”
6YO & 8YO (in unison): “Wormtongue!”
Eomer: “How long since Sauroman bought you?”
8YO: “Wasn’t it Gandalf who said that?”
Orc: “Looks like meats back on the menu!”
8YO: “Does that mean they’re eating the Hobbits? Oh, they’re eating their own kind.”
*Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are given Hasufel and Arod*
8YO: “Didn’t they offer them three horses and they took two?”
*they ride towards Fangorn*
6YO: “Hey Gimli, you’re supposed to be feeling sick.”
Aragorn: “…their hands were bound.”
8YO: “One of them wasn’t… What about eating the Lembas? They forgot about it.”
Aragorn: “They went into Fangorn Forest.”
Gimli: “What madness drove them there?
8YO: “It’s a good forest!”
My wife: “It depends on who you are.”
8YO: “Oh, right.”
*Merry and Pippin climb up what they think is a tree but turns out to be an ent*
8YO: “This isn’t how they met Treebeard.”
*Treebeard drops Merry and Pippen before Gandalf the White*
8YO: “This is totally unbooklike!”
Gandalf: *whistles*
8YO: “Is he calling Shadowfax? They missed the part where their horses were missing.”
Watching the scene where the tree traps Merry and Pippin it sounded just like Old Man Willow in the old forest and Treebeard rebuking it sounded just like Tom Bombadil talking to him.
4YO: “Daddy, why is Treebeard a tree?”
Me: “He’s not, he’s an ent.”
*Grima leaves Edoras*
6YO: “I know where he is going. Mor…”
8YO: “No he isn’t. He’s going to Isengard.”
6YO: “Oh right.”
8YO: “Is Isengard named after the river Isen?”
Me: “Yes.”
*Éowyn sings*
6YO: “She knows Elvish??”
8YO: “No, that is her own language.”
Saruman: “Gandalf the White. Gandalf the Fool.”
6YO: “NO! You’re Saruman the Stupid!”
Saruman: “The world of men will fall.”
6YO: “But he’s a man!”
Me: “No, he’s a Maia.”
8YO: “Like Gandalf and Melian.”
SmĂ©agol: “Leave now and never come back.”
Gollum: “NO!”
6YO: “He’s fighting against himself.”
*Faramir and company attack*
6YO: “Who’s attacking?”
8YO: “The men of Gondor. Yes. I think Gondor’s the South Kingdom.”
*Éowyn gives Aragorn stew*
8YO: “What kind of stew is it?”
Me: “Not the greatest.”
Aragorn: “87”
8YO: “How old do they live?”
Me: “He lives to be 210.”
6YO: “Because he’s descended from a half-elven that decided to be a man.”
Aragorn: “This is a dream.”
Arwen: “Then it is a good dream.”
*they kiss*
6YO: “Eww. That is definitely a dream.”
*they kiss again*
6YO: “Why does he have to have these dreams?”
4YO: “They kiss to marry.”
8YO: “They’re not married yet, not until Return of the King.”
Éowyn: “Where is the woman that gave you that [necklace]?”
Aragorn: “She is sailing to the undying lands with all her kin.”
8YO: “She isn’t!”
*wargs attack*
8YO: “AHHH! That isn’t in the books!! They’re skipping so much.”
*Legolas swings onto Gimli’s horse.”
8YO: “Nobody can do that!”
Me: “Remember Beren’s leap?”
8YO: “Oh yeah.”
6YO: “Does the king survive?”
8YO: “Of course.”
6YO: “I don’t mean Aragorn.”
Gimli: “That one counts for me.”
8YO: “This isn’t where they have their contest.”
*Legolas looks over the cliff where Aragorn fell*
6YO (worried): “Does Aragorn survive?”
8YO: “Yes!”
[Surprisingly there was no comment about this not being in the book]
*Aragorn floats to shore*
6YO: “Is he dead?”
8YO: “NO!”
*Arwen leaves Rivendell*
6YO: “Why is she going?”
8YO: “She isn’t.”
*Frodo and Sam’s blindfolds are removed in Henneth AnnĂ»n*
8YO (excited): “The waterfall!”
*Treebeard walks with Merry and Pippin*
4YO: “That really is called Treebeard!”
*other ents gather for entmoot*
4YO: “That is a lot of Treebeards!”
*Éowyn complains to Aragorn that she isn’t allowed to fight*
6YO: “They’re not allowed to marry. They won’t marry!”
4YO (ornery voice): “Yes them will.”
*elves approach Helm’s Deep*
8YO: “Are they from Gondor?”
My wife: “Do they look like they’re from Gondor?”
8YO: “No.”
*army of orcs approach Helm’s Deep*
6YO: “THAT LOOKS LIKE A CITY LIT UP!!”
*Legolas shoots and giant ladder falls off the keep of Helm’s Deep into the Saruman’s army*
6YO: “Are those all Orcs?”
Me: “Yes.”
6YO: *hysterical delighted laughter*
*ents exit Fangorn*
My wife: “They can move fast when they want.”
6YO: “They can move faster than they talk*
*Frodo, Sam, and Gollum bought into Osgiliath*
8YO: “They weren’t brought into [the city]! They were let free!”
*Huorns begin to destroy orcs*
8YO: “That’s for killing all their friends.”
6YO: “KILL ALL THE ORCS!” *evil laughter*
8YO: “[Faramir] didn’t tell them ‘don’t drink from the Morgul Vale!’ “
*Sam and Frodo walk through Ithilin*
6YO: “Why don’t they put the hoods on?”
8YO: “Thank you for reading the book before this or we wouldn’t notice mistakes. Or we’d think the book had mistakes.”
*end credits roll*
8YO: “Can we pleeeeease watch Return of the King?”
6YO: “Please! Pretty please!”
Me: “No, that is for next week. Plus you’d be up until after midnight if we started it now.”

Of TĂșrin Turambar

Today we read the depressing chapter Of TĂșrin Turambar in the Silmarillion.

8YO: “What?!! Lembas!”
My wife: “Do you remember it?”
8YO: “Yes! In the Lord of the Rings in LothlĂłrien they were given it!”
6YO: “Gimli thought it was cram.”
8YO: “And Frodo and Sam practically lived off it.”
The Orcs though that a storm “was sent against them by the great Enemies beyond the Sea.”
8YO: “The Valar!”
When Glaurung sets up his abode in Nargothrond.
8YO: “That’s what dragons do, they put all their treasure into a huge pile and sleep on it.”
“…but all her heart was given to Turumbar.”
6YO: “They’re not allowed to marry!!”

Of the Fifth Battle : Nirnaeth Arnoediad

Today our reading of the Silmarillion continued with Of the Fifth Battle : Nirnaeth Arnoediad. This is such a sad time as the Noldor come so close to pulling off a victory.

When we read about Ecthelion and Glorfindel guarding the flanks of the Gondolindrim I asked, “Do you remember Glorfindel?”
8YO: “Yes, he rescued Frodo. But in the movie they changed it, right?”
Me: “Yes, to Arwen.”
8YO: “They shouldn’t have changed it.”
After learning about the huge pile of heads the Orcs made of the slain Men of Hador the six year old piped up. “Is this where the Dead Marshes are?”
Me: “No, that is near Mordor.”
Once we read that HĂșrin slew seventy trolls at the end of Nirnaeth Arnoediad I made the point that he killed far more than either Gimli or Legolas did at Helm’s Deep.
“…and there came a great storm of wind out of the West.”
8YO: “Who controls the wind?”
6YO: “ManwĂ«.”
8YO: “Oh, right.”
