On our way home we needed to find a place to stay after we decided not to stay at our North Carolina campground an extra night. Since I'll always detour through a National Park we decided to drive through the Smokies instead of driving around on the interstate.
We found a campground just past Gatlinburg where we reserved a spot and then we took our time driving through the park.
It was probably the shortest time I've ever spent in the park, as whenever we visit the area we try to spend plenty of time in the park, but I still got some great pictures and we had some fun times.
Of course we had to get a picture at the sign by the park entrance.
We made a quick stop at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center.
This humorous sign is a great way to educate people about how they should act in the wilderness.
As we were driving up into the park itself I kept looking for a good place to pull over where we could walk down to the river. I wanted the kids to get a chance to soak their feet in the water for a bit.
There were some vibrantly green plants down by the waterside.
The girls were a bit nervous at first, but they did enjoy walking in the shallows, though they agreed that the water was cold.
The intricate shapes of ferns are quite fascinating.
Using the long exposure setting is fun when you photograph moving water.
This amazing view was visible by the roadside before we were up to the highest elevation.
We also stopped for a few minutes at Newfound Gap and as always we climbed the stairs to the top of this platform.
A few white flowers were blooming near the platform.
This view is one I've photographed several times from the parking lot at Newfound Gap.
You can see a few more pictures from our short trip in this album.
