Enjoyable Fall

Today was a day to enjoy fall weather.

My sister Laurie is in town for the weekend. She helped Amy to make applesauce and she and I made an apple pie using some Northern Spy apples we got at an Indiana orchard earlier this week.

In the evening after dinner I started a fire outside. While Amy and Laurie thought it was too cold they did enjoy the heat of the fire.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this wonderful season.

Snow commute

This morning's commute wasn't a short one. Normally I drive into Cincinnati in 15-20 minutes (it is 10 minutes sans traffic). Today it took me 50 minutes, which I'm sure isn't as long as some.

I saw some interesting tracks on the front porch as soon as I walked outside.

Here was the view out front (last night the road and sidewalk had been completely clear after Monday's storm).

The view down the street.

A closeup of my car.

Dixie Highway was the clearest road along my route.

As I approached I75/71 I could see traffic was nasty.

At one point the lanes had shifted out of alignment. We were creeping along under 5 MPH for most of this stretch.

The lower deck of the Brent Spence wasn't terrible.

Here was my first glimpse of Union Terminal.

The last bit wasn't clear, but not too bad. Thankfully the employee parking lot was mostly clear.

On a positive note I got to listen to plenty of my current audiobook, a lecture on the early Middle Ages.

A Storm is Rolling In

A storm is definitely rolling in. I'm at my parent's house in Tennessee. I looked up a few minutes ago and noticed lightning in the west.

The sun set about fifteen minutes ago, but it shouldn't be this dark solely based on the sun.
View of the west.

View of the east.

Is it cold?

I'll even admit that this is cold, coat wearing weather.

Snowy Traffic

It started snowing this afternoon. It wasn't too much, just enough to make the roads dangerous. I ended up leaving work late, around 6:45. I didn't get home until 8:15!

The drive normally takes me 20 minutes. You can see how bad traffic was on this screenshot above. The interstate wasn't actually that bad, whereas I'd heard that other roads were nasty. The problem was people heading in other directions. I was quite glad to get home and heat up something for dinner.

Thunder and Rain

I just drove home through pouring rain. If I hadn't been seeing lightning on a very regular basis I'd go for a short walk.

Is a storm coming?

When I look to the south east I see this view:

But to the west dark clouds are rolling in.

The temperature is 91, so some rain would be welcome.

Pond

I didn't realize the word pond could be a verb. I opened my Weather Channel app this morning and clicked on the severe weather alert. At the bottom I spotted these lines.

Interesting.

Verdant after the Rain

This is the view I see in spring and summer behind my apartment--when looking out of my garage or bedroom window. It isn't a bad sight. Of course in the winter the view isn't as nice.

I took this picture yesterday after a night and morning of heavy rain. It was a wonderful morning with plenty of thunder and lightning to keep things interesting. The foliage seems so much greener after a storm--even though my camera doesn't quite capture all of the sight.

Sunburn

I only sunburned the first day in Okefenoke. I forgot to reapply sun screen and my knees and wrists were red. We saw more shade and reapplications of sun screen.

The bits that burned on my wrists are starting to peel. They never really hurt after the first afternoon.

Thunder?

I hope we don't get thunderstorms tonight. They kept appearing and disappearing from Thursday's long range forecast...

Warm Enough

I don't really like a hot car at the end of a day at work…

Still Spring

The weather is staying springish. It started raining rather heavily a bit before I left work. Of course the wettest I got was when entering my car and trying to fold up the umbrella. I do so enjoy having my garage to drive into at home.

As you can see the rain has kept on through the evening. I did notice that further north snow is falling, but it hasn't gotten quite that cold here.

Inside a Dome

This was the view I saw when driving into work a few days ago.  It appeared as though I was inside a large dome.

Before you ask, no it isn't the top of my windshield.  This was an actual cloud bank (or dome).  The area in front of me was the only area where I could see semi-clear sky.

The "dome" appeared to break up just a bit once I got close to the Creation Museum.

I've never seen anything like this before. I  thought it was pretty amazing and knew that I had to capture some pictures.

Power Outage

On my way home from Bible Study I reentered the realm of cell service. It was after midnight, but I got several text messages from hours before. Apparently our neighborhood lost power and my sister wanted to let me know. I plugged my iPhone in on the way home to make sure it would have the fullest charge and could serve as an alarm clock in the morning. Alas when I turned onto my street lights were again shining. I took the following video of my alarm clock around thirty minutes after midnight. I figure power was restored near 21:30…

I assume the outage was weather related as we had a good thunderstorm in the area earlier, but I haven't heard anything to know for certain.

A Bit More

I just walked home from my sister's place. It had snowed a bit before I went over, but I just discovered that it had snowed more in the several hours I was there watching the Olympics. It wasn't foggy like the Vancouver ski slopes, but flakes were definitely falling.

I'm sure the accumulation won't be that much, and much of the previous snow has melted... Still it is noticable and will temporarily cover up the dirty snow.

Let it snow, let it snow...

Frozen Fountain

Is anyone tired of snow pictures yet?

In the past few months I've really tried to keep at least one post per day, and if I can at least a picture a day. There have only been a few days that I have failed to post--so I think this might be developing into a habit.  Even if that many people aren't reading this I know that I can go back and re-read posts later.

Anyway, rather than pictures pre-posted from my iPhone (which isn't cheating, but aren't as nice as other posts and pictures) I decided to pre-load this week with pictures from my regular camera.

Melting Snow

While the snow is melting now (or may be melted by the time this post goes live), I took this picture while it was still falling.  You can see where snow, covered by ice, began to ball of the edge of the pavilion roof and curve around.  I especially like how the icicles are pointing inwards now.

I was just typing up the tags for this post and as I applied "weather" I realized that I really need a snow tag.  It is something that I might go back to edit into this winter's posts.  It would be a useful thing to bring up all of the snow pictures that I've posted--especially some of the old ones.

This picture is fun enough that I can't just post one.  I took several different shots from slightly different angles, so I'll include a couple of those below.

A Picnic Progression

It may still be cold for most, but it would be easier to eat lunch outside. Here are three pictures from the past couple weeks--the last is from earlier today.
