Summer Fair #1: Dearborn County

Last night I went to the first fair of the summer with Kyle and Amanda, the Dearborn County Fair just over the river in Indiana.

Amanda wanted to try frog legs.  She offered me some and they weren't bad.  They tasted fishy but weren't bad.

We watched the goats for a little while--I think this was the intermediate level.

We saw this hand washing station and Kyle thought about playing Frisbee, but we couldn't find one (and Edana wasn't along either, :( ).

There were a few cows, but the area was dark and my picture didn't turn out too well.  This one was even a combination of two shots.

When we came up to this pen the older goat was eating out of the food dish, right around the small one.

I thought this drawing was pretty cool--it is quite intricate.

Ah, old things, they can look so cool when you repurpose them.

This was a Tide goat!  Quite a creative reusing of parts.

I'd love to figure out what wood this was made of.  I liked how it transitions from light to dark tones.

I took this picture to show Amanda how the camera worked, but it is a neat LEGO creation.

I'm not sure what the significance of this was,but Amanda wanted a picture of it.

Can you read the text?  It claims that a serving of peanut butter should be the size as the tip of your thumb!!  Who can just eat that small of an amount of peanut butter?  Even if I'm just getting some as a quick snack I always eat more than that.

When I first read this I thought it said Live (as in alive, not dead) Tobacco, free!

We saw the Williams brothers and talked for a bit.

We had to visit the small critters.

Some of the rabbit breeds were familiar, though Kyle just kept calling them dinner.

Amanda and I both had to drag Kyle over for this shot.

This was in the same area as the above piece--a chainsaw carver.  I remember seeing this same setup the past couple years.  The designs are pretty cool.

I had to take at least one picture of a tent stake--it is in my photography contract, ;-).

The sheep were pretty cool.

This little goat seemed so tiny.

This makes for an even better size comparison.

We didn't stop here, but I had to get a picture of books!

I saw this sign on the way out.  There wasn't anyone around for me to make sure that my car was authorized and okay to drive around outside of the fair...

I plan to visit more fairs over the summer and hopefully I'll post about them also.

Amusement

Yesterday, after church I went to Kings Island with Edana and Brion. They both have passes and it was bring a friend for $10 day.

This log ride was the first one we rode. It sure felt good to get wet.

Brion's shirt turns colors in the sunlight.

We only ended up going on three rides. I got my one time ride on Diamondback (fun, but it made me nauseated quickly). It was worth it for a fun afternoon.

Shōgun

I'm playing Shōgun with Tim and Kyle. I've never played before, so I'll blame my losses on that, ;-). Honestly though this game has been a valuable learning experience. I'm looking forward to playing more games in the future. Tim has played many times and this is Kyle's second game.

Intense Mario

Brion Sr, Adam, and Amanda are playing Mario on Brion's Wii. They are quite competetive.

Sky Diving

On Sunday night many of the women at work got together to have a bridal shower for Amanda--my roommate's fiancée. It was decided that the guys needed to do something exciting. Adam and I figured out that sky diving was the perfect idea. We found a great place that was local and only charged $25 (we're not rich you know). Despite the name their website isn't quite running yet, but their legal department is doing well.

It was a fun evening. I only have one picture right now, but I expect to have more in the future...

~Matt

PS The best part was that at least a couple of the women were not entirely sure if we were really going or not--we really had them worried.  I wish I could have kept a better poker face, but some of the other guys did better than I to sell it.

What's Your Favorite Color?

I couldn't think of the Bastians (at least four of them) when I saw this sign a while back.

Music, Food, and Friends

Tonight the Minnards (photographers at the Creation Museum) invited my over to their place (along with others from work) to enjoy some music.

Paul played the guitar.

Jen tickled the ivories.

And Buddy Davis played and sang!

I also grabbed a couple videos:

In this song (and others) I really enjoyed Buddy's harmonica:

For a minute we thought Marty might play, but he declined…

Deb made some great chili and cornbread. It was nice to eat a meal I hadn't cooked or had to buy.

Time at the Rink

I got back from the skating rink not too long ago. It was fun overall. I'd definitely like to go back, but the only public evening times are on Friday.

Starting next Friday the Creation Museum will be open until 9:00 on Fridays...until the end of September.

I did fall three times (yes, ice is very hard) and stayed close to the edge.

Here are some of the people I was skating with amid the crowd. There were several people from the Creation Museum and two of my nephews.

Kelsey hadn't ever been skating either. She used the buckets for awhile and she never fell!

A bit later Kelsey skated with Kaitlyn and Bethany.

Chris likes a good pink cell phone!

Don't worry, I'll make fun of myself too. Bethany was kind enough to take this video of me. I promise that I did improve later and was actually starting to be comfortable when we had to get off the ice.

This was a cool sign found near the back of the rink.

Thin Ice

Well I haven't been skating yet, but I should tomorrow evening. I'm sure that I'll fall down, and I have a feeling someone will capture it with a camera. But I don't really care, I'm just hoping to have fun.

Right now I'm watching the ladies skating finals. It is amazing to watch them. They are out on the ice for quite some time. I hold my breath for an instant every time one of them starts to jump, fearing that they will fall. Thus far watching the last group we've seen some great performances.

It doesn't look like the US will medal, but I saw several American medals earlier today, so that is okay. Fantastic performances can be better than US medals (especially if they are not German).

I've heard that the Germans have led the medal counts at recent winter games, but thus far the US has taken the lead and hasn't relinquished it. Listening to the commentators I gather that these games have been good for Americans in sports we don't tend to medal in.

Well I am certainly not expecting any medals tomorrow evening. I really have no idea what to expect. I really have never ice skated before...

I'm going back to watching the games, this is too distracting.

The Cure for a Runny Cold

I'm going to assume that Jen knows what she is talking about. She is from Flatland after all and runny noses wouldn't encounter any elevation changes there as they raced...

Father Huff

While playing indoor mini-golf on Saturday we noticed that the white clothing glowed. Jen had a white shirt on that barely showed; it looked like a clerical collar.

The picture isn't that clear, but you can see the white stripe at least. The game was fun, and the owner is a Christian who visited the Creation Museum this summer.

I don't know when, but I think I'd go back and play again.
