While the characters were starting their third chapter in prison (and the author was talking about things like book time—one sentence can describe years of duration) the kids realized there was one character still on the loose.
8YO: “There’s one Smedry we haven’t heard about [in prison].”
7YO: “Dad, is there one more Smedry? That was introduced with Sing.”
8YO: “There’s still one Smedry on the loose. At least there’s one Smedry that I think is still on the loose. Dad, have you noticed there is one Smedry they haven’t mentioned yet?”
When the characters managed to escape by getting the guard angry by throwing things at him and then disarming him when he got close to the cell the oldest kid had her own hypothesis to propose.
8YO: “Can I tell you what I thought they were doing? I thought they were trying to throw something at him to knock him out. I’ve heard that in stories, hitting someone on the head to make them unconscious.”
