Akallabêth

Tonight we read the Akallabêth in the Silmarillion, The Downfall of Númenor.

“This was the beginning of that people that in the Grey-elven speech are called the Dúnedain…”
*excitement ensued as only yesterday the eight year old had asked when they would learn about the Dúnedain*
6YO: “Was Aragorn alive?”
8YO: “No.”
6YO: “Aragorn’s father?”
8YO: “No.”
6YO: “Aragorn’s father’s father?”
8YO: “No. It was long, long, long, long before them.”
6YO: “But they live a very, very, very long time because they’re descended from one that chose to be a man but used to be an elf.”
8YO: “Half [an elf].”
“In this age, as is elsewhere told, Sauron arose again in Middle-earth…”
6YO: “HEY, HEY, SAURON!!! I hate him. I hate Sauron.”
4YO (ornery mode, not serious): “I like him!”
“But Pharazôn took her to wife against her will…he seized the sceptre into his own hand…and the name of his queen he changed to Ar-Zimraphel.”
8YO: “But her name was Míriel!”
6YO (indignant): “He’s not allowed to do that and he’s not allowed to take the scepter!! Does that mean the king?”
Me: “Yes.”
“But Ar-Pharazôn was not yet deceived, and it came into his mind that, for the better keeping of Sauron and if his oaths of fealty, he should be brought to Númenor…”
8YO: “That’s a baaad idea. That’s what Sauron wanted.”
“…Amandil, councilor of the King, and his son Elendil, whose sons were Isildur and Anárion…”
6YO: “Is that the same Isildur?”
8YO: “No he was named after him. They were different.”
6YO: “Awwww. I wanted them to be the same.”
8YO: “They’re different.”
6YO: “Wait, Dad hasn’t answered.”
Me: “They’re the same.”
6YO: “Yay!”
(I’m not sure why the eight year old was confident they weren’t the same person 🤷‍♂️)
“And Seven Stones they had, the gift of the Eldar…”
8YO: “We know about those. Are those the seven seeing stones?”
Me: “Yes.”
