Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor and Of the Darkening of Valino

Today as we continued reading the Silmarillion we got through two chapters: Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor and Of the Darkening of Valinor.

As soon as I read that Ungoliant took the shape of a spider both of the older two called out “Shelob! Shelob! Shelob!” and so I reminded them that Shelob was the descendant of Ungoliant. I’d told them the story of Melkor and Ungoliant destroying the trees in brief back when we first encountered Shelob in The Two Towers.
The eight year old also drew several pictures, including the Silmarils locked in Fëanor’s iron cage, Melkor talking to Fëanor at Formenos, and Ungoliant sucking the trees dry after Melkor speared them. She’s putting them in a notebook that I hope she’ll enjoy looking back at later. It also has a number of her LotR drawings in it.
