Tonight we read Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath. I reminded the kids that we were on last chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion tonight and the six year old was despondent. “We’re almost done with the book!”
“…and she bore to him Elrond and Elros, who are called the Half-elven.”
6YO: “ELROND?? WHAT??? Is it the same Elrond?”
8YO: “Yes it is the same Elrond.”
“…and the Silmaril was bound upon his brow; and ever its light grew greater as they drew into the West.”
6YO: “Because they were getting nearer to Valinor?”
Me: “Yep.”
…”Morgoth looked not for the assault that came upon him from the West…”
8YO: “But he was wrong… In the last part of the book will we learn how Sauron becomes Dark Lord?”
Me: “Yes we will.”
“…well-nigh all the dragons were destroyed…”
8YO: “If they were all destroyed the Hobbit wouldn’t be true. It couldn’t be in the same world.”
6YO: “Was one of them Smaug?”
8YO: “No, he was much later.”
6YO: “Oh yeah. He was descended from one of them. There were girl dragons!”
“…and all the pits of Morgoth were broken and unroofed, and the night of Valar descended into the deeps of the earth.”
8YO: “Now I realize Sauron didn’t do anything. It was the host of the Valar. Sauron didn’t do anything, he just decided to be Dark Lord.”
8YO: “Daddy, were all the wizards Mair?”
Me: “Yep.”
6YO: “And wizardesses.”
Me: “All the wizards were male.”
