Of the Fifth Battle : Nirnaeth Arnoediad

Today our reading of the Silmarillion continued with Of the Fifth Battle : Nirnaeth Arnoediad. This is such a sad time as the Noldor come so close to pulling off a victory.

When we read about Ecthelion and Glorfindel guarding the flanks of the Gondolindrim I asked, “Do you remember Glorfindel?”
8YO: “Yes, he rescued Frodo. But in the movie they changed it, right?”
Me: “Yes, to Arwen.”
8YO: “They shouldn’t have changed it.”
After learning about the huge pile of heads the Orcs made of the slain Men of Hador the six year old piped up. “Is this where the Dead Marshes are?”
Me: “No, that is near Mordor.”
Once we read that Húrin slew seventy trolls at the end of Nirnaeth Arnoediad I made the point that he killed far more than either Gimli or Legolas did at Helm’s Deep.
“…and there came a great storm of wind out of the West.”
8YO: “Who controls the wind?”
6YO: “Manwë.”
8YO: “Oh, right.”
