Tonight we started The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and read the preface and the first two verses, the first one being the same as the book and the second “Bombadil Goes Boating.”
8YO (looking at the cover of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil before we started reading): “Who was Tom Bombadil?”
Me: “We don’t know.”
As we read the second verse the question came back.
8YO: “Is Tom Bombadil a dwarf?”
Me: “No.”
8YO: Who was Tom Bombadil?”
Me: “We don’t know.”
6YO: “Does the one who made the book know?”
8YO: “J. R. R. Tolkien.”
6YO: “Does J. R. R. Tolkien know?”
Me: “He never told us what Tom Bombadil was.”
8YO: “How old was Tom Bombadil? Do we know that? Was he around during the first age?”
Me: “Let me look it up.”
Me: “He saw the elves go East* so he is as old as the elves or older.”
8YO: “So he is older than Elrond.”
Me: “Yes. And remember Galadriel is older than Elrond.”
8YO: “Much older. She was in Valinor even before the Trees fell!”
“You old farmer fat that cannot walk for wheezing…”
8YO: “Who is he?”
6YO: “The guy with the dogs.”
Me: “Come, Maggot! Help me up!”
